Case Study: InFlow Pilates Caloundra Transforming with Living Design

When the team at InFlow Pilates Caloundra invited iki and moss into their studio on Bulcock Street, the brief was clear: the space felt clean and beautiful — but a little clinical.

The large reformer studio, fitted with wooden reformers and black accents, had a strong design foundation.

The barre and yoga studio was light-filled with white linen curtains and timber floors, yet it felt cold, expansive and echoey. The reception area — the heart of the studio — needed the most love. The existing plants were tired, and the white pots were looking sorry for themselves.

The solution? No builders. No renovation costs. Just thoughtful plant curation, perfectly matched to the space.

The Brief: Warmth, Wellness & Zero Disruption

Following a site visit, Jane from iki and moss assessed:

  • Natural light levels (bright, with some direct sun in reception)

  • Air conditioning and airflow

  • Temperature differences between spaces

  • Client flow and class schedules

Install needed to happen between classes — zero disruption to members and staff.

The goal was simple:
Create a warmer, more welcoming wellness environment that felt intentional, calming and elevated.

Reception: The Meet & Greet Glow-Up

Reception is where clients check in, sit on the benches, chat with staff and connect with community. It sets the tone for every class.

Five large sage green planters were carefully positioned across the reception space. The soft sage tone was the perfect cool complement to the tiled floors and the studio’s wellness aesthetic — grounding the space without overpowering it.

Each planter was paired with a plant selected not just for looks — but for its ability to thrive in the bright, sunny, air-conditioned environment.

The Plant Selection

Giant Bird of Paradise

A true statement piece.

Loves bright indirect light. Can tolerate some sun. Enjoys humidity and moderate watering.

“Most indoor plants love bright indirect light — and reception definitely has light… if anything, maybe too much! The Bird of Paradise was the perfect choice,” says Jane

.

Care notes:

  • Requires excellent drainage

  • Doesn’t like sitting in water

  • Thrives in the iki and moss custom potting mix (perlite, vermiculite, coco coir and peat moss for drainage success)

  • Weekly leaf cleans and neem oil treatments keep it glossy and dust-freeMake it stand out

Kentia Palm

Jane’s personal favourite.

A slow-growing tropical palm that loves bright indirect light but tolerates lower light conditions too. One Kentia anchors reception, and another was placed in the reformer studio to soften the structured layout of the equipment.

  • Loves humidity

  • Benefits from regular misting

  • Elegant, architectural and quietly impactful

Cast Iron Plant

Sturdy. Deep green. Resilient.

True to its name, it thrives in lower light and tolerates a little neglect — making it perfect for balancing brighter species and ensuring longevity in busy commercial environments.

Rhaphis Lady Palm

Elegant, refined and beautifully architectural, the Rhaphis Lady Palm is a timeless indoor favourite.

  • Loves bright indirect light

  • Tolerates lower light conditions with ease

  • Enjoys humidity

  • Slow-growing and low maintenance

With its fan-shaped fronds and rich green colour, the Rhaphis adds softness and sophistication without overwhelming a space. It’s perfect for wellness environments where calm, filtered light and a serene atmosphere are key.

Bamboo Palm (Seifrizzi)

Soft, feathery and textural.

Handles bright indirect light with ease and adds movement and natural softness to the reception layout.

ZZ Plant – The Glossy Workhorse

Another of Jane’s personal favourites — and for good reason.

The ZZ plant is famously hard to kill. With lush, deep green, naturally shiny leaves, it instantly elevates a space while requiring minimal fuss.

Why Jane loves it:

  • Extremely drought tolerant

  • Thrives in bright indirect light but tolerates low light

  • Loves its leaves kept clean and glossy

  • Can be propagated over and over again

  • If planted outside in the ground in suitable climates, it can grow into an impressively large specimen

A large ZZ vase installation was styled on the wooden front table in reception, complementing the existing snow pothos focal point and anchoring the space with rich, polished greenery.

Client Reaction:

Within hours of installation, feedback rolled in from the InFlow Community:

“Feeling so fresh”

“Oooooo, I love!”

“I love the new plants.”
“The new plants in the lobby area look fantastic! What a lovely refresher — and I love love love the mint green planters.”

The transformation was instant and noticeable.

Ongoing Care: Zero Stress for the Studio

Carla, Studio Manager at InFlow Pilates Caloundra, shared:

“Not only do the clients love the new plants and sage pots, they’ve given us a simple, affordable space refresh while we work towards a future fit-out.

Previously, I cared for the plants myself — and I really do love them — but I’m busy managing the studio and looking after our wonderful community. I’m not a plant expert, and I don’t always know what should go where or how to keep everything thriving.

In fact, I was just about to take a trip to Bunnings to replace a dying plant when the call came through — wow, the universe 🙏 — it was Jane offering her services. The timing was perfect!

She staged the space seamlessly between classes and now looks after the plants effortlessly each week, so I don’t have to think about them at all. There’s no upfront cost — just a weekly rental and care fee, which we can adjust or cancel at any time. And if something doesn’t survive, it’s replaced. No fuss.”

Barre & Yoga Studio: From Clinical to Calming

The barre and yoga space was wooden, bright and white, with linen curtains and beautiful bones — but it felt large and echoey.

The addition of giant sage planters paired with a classically beautiful Kentia Palm and striking cast iron plant softened the acoustics and visually warmed the space.

Now the room feels:

  • Grounded rather than stark

  • Calm rather than clinical

  • Natural rather than minimal

The timber floors are complemented. The white walls feel intentional. The entire space feels curated and wellness-led.

The Result: High Impact, No Renovation

This transformation proves something powerful.

You don’t need builders.
You don’t need renovation budgets.
You don’t need disruption.

Strategic plant styling can:

  • Soften sound

  • Elevate design

  • Improve client experience

  • Support staff wellbeing

  • Refresh a space while future plans evolve

What began as a reception refresh has expanded into the barre and yoga studio — and continues to grow with the business.

The studio now feels warm, natural, grounded and welcoming — all through intentional greenery.

And that’s the power of living design, done properly, by iki and moss. 🌿
